WELCOME BACK TO PW 138!

There have been quite a few significant changes made on board over this week, some that will be covered in this announcement chain and others not, so I would strongly suggest that everyone has a thorough read of all of the announcements posted, as well as re-familiarise yourself with the Terms of Service. There will likely be some hiccups while we get used to some of these changes, but we hope that this will be a positive move for our community.

Keep an eye on this thread throughout the term, as there may be extra things added along the way as they are finalised!

Out of Character Area

After careful consideration, the staff would like to announce the opening of PW's new OOC Area!

This is a space where handlers can discuss a wide variety of things, from PW plots to recipes. This is designed to be a positive space, where there can be casual communication between members to facilitate the building of friendships and meeting new role playing partners. At the moment this area is a trial run, and things are likely to be moved/changed/added depending on how the trial goes. If there is a trend of inappropriate use of this forum, it will be closed or member suspensions put in place. Please read the rules of each of the forums carefully and if there are any questions, please contact a staff member.

This move to help improve OOC collaboration between handlers on-board without the need for off-board communication comes with other changes as well.

  • Group conversation capabilities for all members. The number of participants able to receive a PM will be increased from 1 to: 5 for 11 year olds; 20 for students and adults; 50 for prefects and club leaders
  • The storage quota for PMs will also be increased for most members from 50 to 100
  • OOC Information on profiles. While 100% optional, there is now the opportunity to share your name or alias, pronouns, and other characters you handle on your profile if you so wish. This is to assist with OOC discussions if you wish to participate in any

ToS Edits

Over shutdown there has been a rather significant ToS and handbook edit, with almost every post receiving a bit of a face-lift in terms of wording and whether the rule is still relevant to PW in 2020. More changes may come. The major changes that we would like to draw your attention to specifically are:

  • Rating changes - the whole board is now at least 15+, and there are no longer restrictions on what adults can RP in student-viewable forums (specifically mentions of smoking and drinking). Swearing rules and the word filter remains the same, except the word 'queer' has been removed from the disallowed list to reflect the word's more modern connotations. Anyone using it as a slur will face disciplinary action
  • Changes to the size of handwritten signatures
  • Changes to the marriage/birth/adoption rules in the AW ToS to introduce NPC partnership and parentage
  • Removal of rules requiring PCs for adoptions of students, adoptions of second and subsequent children for single parents, and births of twins (PCing to handle twins is still necessary).
  • Clarification on the disciplinary policy (specifically, the difference between a warning and a violation, and IC and OOC violations)
  • Changes to the party rules
  • Clarifications on the social media policy (more information +here)

There have been some more subtle changes in wording, or the addition of clarification in some areas, so please do a re-read of the +ToS

Facebook and Other Social Media Stance

During shutdown the staff has rewrote and posted our stance on Facebook and other social media platforms. Please take a moment to read this announcement carefully as well as the portions that are in the Term's of Service. The new Facebook Stance announcement will hopefully clear up any confusion on where our stance is. If you have any questions please PM a member of the staff.

New degree track added at Cornswin!

The Cornswin Institute for Advanced Magic has added a humanities degree to its offerings. This also includes several new classes at Cornswin and two new professors. More information about this degree can be found in the University Handbook. Information on how this degree will relate to specific jobs on board should be found through each area's staff in charge.

Articles

There have been numerous changes to the Articles in the Articles forum. A number of the articles that no longer represent how Potter's World is today have been retired, and some of others have been edited to reflect more of how we are as a board today. Please take some time to review the threads in the linked forum if you wish, and keep in mind that there could be more changes to come in the future.

Theme/Skin Updates

PW Gray now has a desktop mode available for those who prefer desktop view on their mobile devices!

As promised, print mode formatting, formerly exclusive to PW Gray, has now been added to the regular (non-desktop) versions of PW Default and PW Purple. Special thanks to Elena Pozniak for allowing us to modify PW Gray's print mode formatting for the other skins!

How to download threads to PDF/Google Docs:

1.  Go to the 'print' option in your browser. You may use ctrl+P on all browsers. On Google Chrome, you can go to the top right corner and click on the 3 little dots. This will bring up a drop down list. Select 'print'. Don't worry; we're not actually printing anything (unless you want to!)

2. Within the print dialog box, you should see the print preview. This print preview has been made printer friendly and removes all graphics/side panels/etc. On the right side, you should see a drop down list for 'Destination'. Click on the drop down list. You will see your printer listed, and you will also see 'save to PDF' and 'save to Google Drive'. Select the option that works best for you.

And that's it!

For those who do not wish to download threads with the special print formatting, the regular formatting will still be available on the desktop versions of PW Default and PW Purple.

Edit Times

To cater to the needs of people who want to utilise the graphics forum and have greater flexibility with character libraries (as well as appease the poor souls who find an unfortunate typo three hours after posting - been there, done that), students will now also have unlimited editing time in line with adult characters. Go forth and edit responsibly.

OWL/NEWT Badges

The staff are very excited to announce a new program for students where you can obtain a pretty OWL and/or NEWT badge in your side panel by participating in lesson and open threads started by Hogwarts professors and other faculty members. This is an OOC perk and does not reflect how your character does on their OWL and NEWT examinations.

You can find more out more information, including what's required of you each term, by checking out these new threads found in the Student Centre: +OWLs and +NEWTs. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM or post in the +Questions thread.

Please take note of the temporary posting requirements while we get the program off the ground +here.

Have fun! :D

AW Quidditch

There have been a few changes to the AW Quidditch Handbook found +here, specifically in relation to the new structure of the Off-Season. We will now be alternating between two types of off-seasons: one that consists of mandatory threads and an optional staff-led mini-event, and one that consists of member-led mini-event(s). Take a look at the Handbook for more information and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
